Amazon is developing more and more each year – and this year might just be the biggest yet. If Amazon pushes into even more markets than before, it might extend its dominance of the online – and offline! – world.
This year, Amazon will celebrate its 25th year as a retailer. But it’s becoming ever more complex and wide-reaching as a retailer. According to Fast Company, here are some reasons why 2020 could be Amazon’s year. Some of these are rooted in fact; others in speculation – but they all indicate how far Amazon now reaches.
Amazon will own some of the internet

It’s fair to claim that Amazon is getting involved with most facets and corners of the online world. With that in mind, what parts of tech will bring their next move? Will Amazon get involved in 5G? New phone tech?
Amazon is constantly restructuring infrastructure in order to become self-sufficient. And Jeff Bezos has already started his own rocket company.
So it’s a safe bet to guess that Amazon will keep moving towards taking over some parts of the internet.
Their advertising will mature
Amazon’s advertising division is already the third-largest in the US. But it still has problems. Because users spend less time on Amazon than they do on its advertising competitors (such as Facebook), Amazon is granted less natural opportunity to show advertising to its users.

The prediction here is that Amazon Advertising introduces tools and programs to become a stronger competitor of Google’s GDN, including better attribution data, clean room options, and exclusive targeting/re-targeting options.
Videos over images
Amazon’s images are surprisingly static. Where other platforms are embracing gifs, videos, livestreams and VR, Amazon are yet to catch up. This year, they might.
The delivery of medicines
Amazon recently bought PillPack, a full-service online pharmacy which delivers medication.
Consumers get irritated by having to pick up their own medication, so Amazon may well start delivering medicines, in a shift that would permanently change the face of the pharmaceutical industry.
Hackers and backlashes
Though Amazon is used with huge regularity with very little issues or problems, it’s not infallible. Very occasionally, the site suffers from security problems. And it’s important to note that millions of third-party sellers use Amazon, which means that some facets of Amazon are inherently vulnerable.
As hackers become more intelligent, they may well target Amazon like never before – and cause some poor PR.
More APIs will fuel a third-party developer boom
“With or without the platform unification, we will see Amazon expand access to APIs, or electronic data exchanges. Amazon currently offers EDI connections for the purposes of order confirmation and shipping functions”
In 2020, RESTful APIs might well be introduced as an alternative to the legacy EDI technology typically used for vendor POs.
